| History of the Circle of Hope Golf Classic |
The first Circle of Hope Golf Classic (COH) was held at the Prestwick Country Club, Plainfield, Indiana in the spring of 1994. Billy Mills and Chris Schenkel (1923-2005) served as the Honorary Chairmen. The goal of COH was to raise enough money to present the first recreation education conference ever held by the Indigenous People. Indianapolis (City of the Land of the Indians) was the site for the Native American Recreation Education Conference. Following the success of both the golf tournament and the conference, it was determined to continue COH to support a newly formed not-for-profit organization, the American Recreation Resource and Education Center, Inc. (ARREC.)
A variety of courses have been the site of this annual event. These included The Fort Golf Course, the Greenfield Country Club, and the Isleta Eagle Golf Course.
Here are some of the very courageous golfers who took on the challenge of The Fort Golf Course in Indianapolis in 1999. |
